Kayla Wallace

Heyo, I’m Kayla Wallace. I recently graduated from Howard University with a bachelor's degree in Communications, concentrating in Journalism and Production. Born in Maryland, raised in Virginia, and shaped by D.C., I’m a multidisciplinary artist and music journalist focused on sound, culture, and storytelling. My work spans creative direction, photography, videography, event curation, and community-based journalism.

During my time at Howard, I made history by curating the university’s first hardcore and alternative music event specifically for Black alternative students and Brown folks in the D.C. community. Every band on the lineup was made up of Black and Brown artists, and it was a powerful reminder of how necessary these spaces are. That event grew out of my project PHASES, a magazine and platform I started to spotlight underrepresented voices in music. Through it, I helped cover new and incoming Black and Brown bands, and created events that centered genre-defying artists who often don’t get seen in traditional Black institutions.

Howard was a complex experience. I quickly noticed the narrow image of Black excellence the university often uplifted, one tied to elitism and respectability, often leaving out those of us with different expressions. But Black identity is expansive. Since age 15, I’ve understood the connection between music and community, and I’ve been committed to nurturing that bond ever since.

Throughout college, I curated benefit shows that raised money for marginalized communities and uplifted underrepresented artists. Whether through interviews, photography, or storytelling, my work has always centered voices that deserve to be heard.

Recently, I’ve been working with SoundFynd, where I’ve stepped more into music marketing and event production. I curated a benefit show under SoundFynd for trans and queer DJs, with proceeds going to the LGBTQ+ Center. That experience was incredibly affirming. It allowed me to merge my values with my skills, while also growing my experience in organizing, branding, and community outreach within the music space.

Now, I’m looking for opportunities to shadow, assist, or work in production roles, especially in environments rooted in music and culture. My purpose is grounded in music journalism and creative storytelling, and I’m committed to continuing the work of building culture, documenting artistry, and creating space for voices that shift the world forward.
